nachtvanmaria“The atmosphere is always serene and very sacred, like you find nowhere else anymore… and at the same time a sort of happy chaos…”

Like no two people are the same, neither are any two pilgrimage sites the same. As a Marian shrine, Warfhuizen has a strikingly unique character. An example is the fact that it attracts many distressed parents, people who have worries about their children, or who have even lost a child. Perusing the book of intentions, we find examples of parents of children with all sorts of problems. Illnesses of all kinds appear in the book, including many children with cancer, genetic diseases, injuries after accidents. Children with psychological illnesses are also notably often entrusted to the cares of Mary. Striking in that context is that Warfhuizen is very popular among parents of children who suffer from schizophrenia. In Warfhuizen, we also see the typically modern problem of children who have arguments with their parents, who no longer want to see their parents. Finally, there are of course the people who have lost a child to illness, an accident or sometimes even murder. In Warfhuizen all these people feel comforted by a mother who knows what suffering is. They feel understood and supported. But, as these things go among Catholics, all things are brought before Mary, serious or not. So not only deadly accidents and chemotherapy, but also driving tests, weak knees and hemorrhoids. That is how it has always been, and that’s how it’s probably always going to be.
